Top tips for reducing your business water bill

3 June 2025

Many businesses underestimate how much money they could save by reducing their water usage, often with very little effort or upfront cost. Whether you're operating from a small office or managing a multi-site setup, here are some of the most effective ways to bring your water bill down.

1. Monitor your usage and check your meter

If your premises has a water meter (which most do), keeping an eye on readings is essential. Regular meter checks can help identify unexpected spikes in usage that may signal hidden leaks or inefficient processes. For even better visibility, consider installing a smart meter or usage tracking system - particularly handy for larger businesses with multiple points of use.

2. Fix leaks and faulty equipment quickly

Even a dripping tap or a constantly running toilet can waste thousands of litres of water each year. Make routine checks part of your maintenance schedule and fix any issues promptly. Don’t forget to check outdoor taps, underground pipework, and lesser-used facilities, especially if you operate seasonally or across multiple buildings.

3. Install water-efficient fixtures

Modern fittings like low-flow taps, aerated showerheads, and dual-flush toilets can significantly reduce water consumption without impacting usability. In kitchens or hospitality settings, switching to high-efficiency dishwashers and pre-rinse spray valves can also cut usage without compromising performance.

4. Engage your team and raise awareness

Simple behavioural changes can make a noticeable difference. Encourage staff to turn taps off properly, report leaks quickly and use water wisely. Clear signage and brief reminders in shared spaces can help reinforce these habits. For larger organisations, building water-saving awareness into induction or training materials is also a smart move.

5. Consider greywater or rainwater reuse

For businesses with high water usage such as manufacturing, landscaping or farming, installing systems to reuse greywater (from sinks or appliances) or harvest rainwater can reduce reliance on mains supply. While this often requires upfront investment, the long-term savings and environmental benefits can be substantial.

6. Review your supplier and contract

If your usage is under control but your bills are still high, it may be time to review your tariff. Some suppliers offer better rates or more tailored support for your type of business. Switching water supplier is straightforward and doesn’t affect your actual supply, only your billing and service provider.
